Why are these Cambodians so judgmental?

Theary Seng has been living in Cambodia for many years now, she must have learned and known so well about her native land and its culture.

And what is wrong if Ms Theary Seng speaking of her Christianity in Cambodia or anywhere? Cambodia has been always adopted foreign religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Brahmanism, ...Cults) from the beginning, and Buddhism was not a new religion that Cambodia adopted either.

People should have rights to know and learn about all religions and they can decide their own fate/destiny. Who are you anyway to dictate the way of people live or desire to choose what they believe.

If you accepted Buddhism from India/Nepal how to end the sufferings, why cannot other Cambodians accept Christianity from the Holy land (Israel) how to know GOD who teach them how live/care/love one another and feed the hungry/needy people?

Don't say that Buddhism is Khmer culture? NO, Buddhism is not Khmer culture. Khmers had culture before Buddhism arrived from foreign land (India/Nepal).

New generation, new culture, and new belief, new knowledge among nations in the world. May GOD Bless Theary Seng and Bless those who attack her.

Very good TS tries to preach Christianity in Cambodia. Why?

(1) To chase all evil monks out from taking food from the poor people' mouths.

(2) To explore more about how the world such as superpower wealthy nations remain powerful? They work hard and they help their country and help to feed the hungry people around the world that's what their GOD teach them.

If we are so great we are not running to live under their roofs (Christians). I would not be surprised more and more of new Cambodian generations will becoming Christians in the near future.

I read about Sangkum Reast Niyum and I knew that Sangkum Reast Niyum, people were educated and noble and beautiful land back then. Today leaders are uneducated/gangsters and the more they wear more stars, the stupid they look.

I am sure TS heard about it too, but I am not sure she dares to express the truth while under gangsters rule.

Under Uneducated gangsters people are losing their land, homes and life. In Sangkum Reast Niyum, no need to close/lock the doors, as is today.

What is wrong for kissing someone they like/love in the public? Cambodians today, most girls are virgin anymore, they are having sex in early ages. Did TS teach them to do that?

Who criticized TS about that subject is just doing worse than humans usually do.

Seng Theary,

You cannot speak Khmer probably, proud as cigar smoker, kiss your man in public places in Cambodia and living with your boyfriend without married. That is Khmer woman who is highly respect Khmer culture and lecture other people to uphold Khmer culture? You must be mad woman.

Please do not feel offended by some comments made by some people who barely used few words because they were not well educated.
You represent women' voice,a fighter for freedom.
Men if you are real cambodians people, please stop using vulgairy words toward a cambodian woman because of our culture of respect.

Anonymous said...

Khmer culture is very close to Buddhism, if Seng Theary is respect Khmer culture why does she covert to be a Christian?

It is disgusting that she dares to criticise Khmer people by not respect and uphold our culture instead of embrace the messy foreign culture while herself smokes cigar and living with her lover without married. Does Khmer culture value a woman smoking cigar and loving with a boyfriend before married???

Seng Theary, before you open your twist mouth criticise the government and other people, please clean up your dirty act first. Did your parent proud of you if they know you are smoking cigar and living with a man before married?

she doesn't know what she's talking about..

to say that khmer culture is higher than the chinese/vietnamese culture just because you're a khmer is totally ignorant.

in fact we khmer have been incorporating the chinese/vietnamese cultures for a long time in many spectrum in life such as food, music and arts, etc.

introducing the alien christian religion in srok khmer is in fact more devastating to the khmer culture. christianity will change everything we do every day, from new year celebration, wedding, funeral, festivals, etc.

to say that her foreigner-indoctrinated faith in christianity is better or more civilised than the current buddhism is just plain stupid.

I assume that the concern of Thea Seng is certainly correct. The people who are criticizing or discriminating against MS Theary Seng, have ever though in the following:

1) Till to 1975, all Cambodian students was allowed learn the true history of the Khmer at the School and universities?

2) After 1979, all students have not allowed to learn the true Khmer history at the schools and universities. Why it is banned now? What is background behind this ? Or thank you, Others Khmers are damp stupid don't think about this?

oh my godddddddddddd not this woman again. I thought she really has an enlightment to share, but I was deeply disappointed big time to hear her on and on ranting and lecture as if she is an expert or something. She has nothing to say folks. She still speaks Khmer with that babyish accent and she repeats her own spoken phrases over and over (which is damned annoying). The audience has no knowledge of her personal views at all since she is never specific on anything. She has no contents to deliver and she is boring as hell. She is the number one promoter of foreign influences on the Cambodian culture and people. Is this the doctoral mind from America? Enough said. Khmer Post staff, you guys better be selective next time. Please choose your guests with specific action plans, and not too general ideas irrelevant the topic at hand.

Anonymous said...

Some of you guys are so afraid of Seng promoting foreign culture or faith, but as I see it - the youth in the entertainment arena adopted a lot of trash from western culture and that is more damaging then the christian faith.

The person who wrote that Theary is living with her man unmarried are you bearing false witness or are you telling the truth? I need two witnesses to confirm that you are telling the truth.

I had reservation about Theary Seng. If you are telling the truth and can be confirm by another person I will believe that she is in the wrong and must repent.

Is it coincidental that after Khmer people adopted Buddhism - starting from Jayavarna 7 - Cambodia has been spiraling downward up to this day?

For one thing, Buddhism is not fitted to stay next to the monster Vietnam - who wanted to grab everything around it.

I personally think if we can switch to Christianity is better.

If all the powerful countries in the world chose Christianity as their religion, realistically, there must be something right about it.

Logically, if we have been doing so horrible, it is time for us to change to something new too, one which has been proven working …

Anonymous said...

People adopted Buddhism and whatever else of false religions because they lost sight of the truth that was of God.

Why did God choose Israel to be his special people? Because every other nations have forsaken God and chose to turn their backs on him. Israel accepted the truth and God established his covenant with them. Israel will once more be a light to the nations, not Buddhism.
It's all recorded in the book of Genesis.

The truth is: Buddhism is demonic in origin. Behind Buddha statue is a prince of the air known as Naga. This prince of the air rule over Buddhism beliefs and enforce it to keep people in the dark. Though everything in Buddhism appears to be bright and beautiful but is only a deception.

Only the Bible reveals of the schemes of the evil ONE to deceive people from the hope that is in Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel. The fact is, without the nation of Israel all people would have been lost to the Prince of this world known as HaSatan.

Current, the Devil wants to destroy the nation of Israel, why? Because he is trying to prevent Yeshua from fulfill his Second Coming Advent. But the Bible promised that will not happen for God will uphold his people and will cause them to triumph over their enemies. Because Israel must usher in the Second Coming of their long awaited Messiah.

When Israel is at peace, the world will have peace. Therefore my hope is not in the United Nations, but in the Prince of Peace. Yeshua is the Prince of Peace.

After the Flood, God blessed the 3 sons of Noah Shem, Ham and Japhet. But the more blessed of the 3 sons of Noah are Shem and Japhet.

Japhets are assinged to the north of the land of Israel. The European Union would be of Japhet descendants. Shem's descendants would be all the Arab nations, including Israel. Ham's descendants would be eastern people Chinese, Japan, India and Africans. I'm not absolute, but this is the general understanding where God dispersed them after the Tower of Bable.

The Khmer people would be of Ham's family tree what I gather.

Oh my god. Not some bozos commenting again. Let me tell you about what I learned from the established higher learning institutions. Since you bozos love to start with Christianity, we will start with it as the beginning point. Christianity is derived from the Jewish religion called Judiasim. Another religion know as Islam also derived from Judiasim. Surprise isn't it. Judiasim was actually derived from the Persian native religion. Nothing is orignal. So in actuality, if you believe in Christianity, then you are believing in the original concepts of the Persians. Ok bozos, don't take my words for it, just do some research on your own. I know what I am talking about because I got an A in the class. By the way, the person named "Abraham" is claimed in all of the three religions of Judiasm, Christianity, and Islam. All religions teach the same good morality that people must follow in order to have peaceful coexistence.

Theary,

You have made some good points in your analysis. However, may I point out that you are who you are because of the fused values that you ehad experienced through your upbrining in the US. You are a product of an American system and later exposure of your parents native values.

The foundation (pheap neung norh maom taom) or "strong sense of identity" that you posses, without perhaps your own acknowledgement, is the composition of the education and christian belief that you were immersed in your youth. Your strong sense of identity is not in a traditional semse of a "Cambodian" or "Khmer" identity.

The true sense of identity/self is being mostly in confidence of one's own self worth, and in a constant and perpetual growing stage where one needs to adapt and adjust the sense to continue to survive and strive in one's own present place and time.

Personally, I support freedom fro people to think, say, and act, so long as the action of one will not harm someone else. The problems I see through my own limited lenses from a far away land is that the Cambodian youths are in a moment when an influx of everything different, economic, cultural, technological, political, is being thrust profusedly upon their young and unexperienced minds.

The challenges are with the leaderships of both parents and government - where the adults with more experiences and maturity could help to mold and shape what their youth and future socio-cultural the way we all believe should be one of "cambodia."

Currently, we have a whole slew od issues to materialize. Things like impunity, corruption, false titles, are negatively contributing to the confusing culture. It seems like everyone is out for themselves regardless of any consequence or impact to his or her own society at large.

Like Theary said, it is alright to dye your hair in silly color if it makes you feel good or prettier, but not okay if you did it because you worship and wanted to look like another person and gave less value to someone else who kept their own natural hair color. The same thing is with the competitive mentality of obtaining bigger and better materials because you wanted your neighbors to respect you and think highly of you. You should do those thing if it would make you feel better yourself, not because it would make you better than your neighbors.

The current corrupt and feudal system in Cambodia does not help, but to encourage false sense of identity - and that is our current problem in Cambodia. Cambodia needs to strengthen all of its institutions as a core foundation/national identity, so that individuals could build theirs.

Cambodia as a nation is at the lowest point in South East Asia and ranks horribly low among other nations in the world. What is considered Cambodian from several years ago whether it is what we call culture, tradition or norm are not regarded with pride, value and honour anymore. The government of Cambodia, an institution to represent everything from hard work to honesty and to upholding the Khmer values, serves as a very bad example to show that money, wealth and power are the keys to success no matter how they are obtained. The end justifies the means!

National education system in Cambodia is of low quality with teachers depending on earning more money somewhere else whether it is through additional jobs or selling exam answers to students to support their livelihood due to very poor salaries they get from the government. Droves of Cambodian students graduate every year from schools and higher educational institutions of the country with very small number of them deserve to hold degrees which signify their true learnt knowledge and ability. Many other young people, especially young women with means are not in school or spending time reading books or learning useful skills, especially technical ones, but are busy on something else such as spending enormous amount of time on facebook, speaking with friends, gossiping or loitering in supermarkets or shops. As a nation Cambodian young people are much behind their counterparts in the neighbouring countries and region in term of understanding, (general and technical) knowledge and proud embrace of their own culture, thus providing a lot of room for powerful and seductive western culture to fill in those many gaps that are ripe for influence.

Besides wealth and power to show off one’s prestige, which is regarded over-important in Cambodian society, Hun Sen’s Cambodia goes one step further in using degrees, even though they are, most often undeserved, honorary degrees from questionable universities around the world, to imply the possession of knowledge of higher learning. People forget that what you say and how you say it tell so much about your education!

Education and for that reason knowledge is a shining light to the mind of those who possess it. In a regime of Hun Sen which is filled with dishonesty, injustice, corruption and power by force, why would those who are in power want to eliminate their own controls by empowering those they rule with education that illuminates and frees the mind. Isn’t that suicidal to the dictatorial regime of Hun Sen?

Many other factors and reasons as mentioned by a number of valuable and good comments above contribute to the willingness and readiness of young Cambodians to adopt new cultures and traditions at the expense of their own.

5:29 PM/Pi Anh 6:16 PM.

When did you decide to be part of humans with culture? You are the lowest class just like Hun Sen et al. the Primitive/barbarous people.

NO!! STOP LYING. Khmer Culture is not close to Buddhism, real Khmers worshiped evil spirits, Ab-Thmub, Snae and Ampeu. Real Khmers just look at the thugs in Cambodia today. Until later the Indians came and led Khmers to worship GOD the creator (Hinduism). Then Buddhism brought in later, the Khmers run amok and their vibrators are so low, so instead of Buddhism they are evils worse than before.

Why cannot TS convert to Christian when you converted from evil to the same evil aka fake Buddhist?

TS is smart to convert to Christian, because Christians believe in GOD, the creator which is close to Hinduism, the Khmer Empire had.

What is wrong with smoking cigar with others? You are too disgusting for attacking TS, and why don't you preach your stupidity to the gangsters like Hun Sen, and his low life friends to stop smoking, killing, and robbing from poor Khmer people?

TS can marry any time as she wishes to do so, but this day marriage is just for a convenience not faithful love as in the past, so why does she have to get headache to get married.

Look at yourself, how many men did you cozy with and you end up broken heart?

TS is very smart choosing to be independent and help others if she can and she has more times to devote her service to GOD to help those victims from the beast half animal and half human Hun Sen who abused them rob their land and homes to see/know GOD.

They should stop feeding those evil million monks while they can barely feed themselves, and stop letting the fake Buddhists such as yourself to collect money from them every night to feed Yuon army/CPP.

May GOD Bless TS (Theary Seng) and also Bless the evils aka Pi Anh that attack her.

Right on target, 4:46 AM! Not just the silly hair colors of the youths, a very important institution like the police or ministry of the interior is also guilty in allowing the degrading of a decent culture. The government is creating a culture of impunity, begging, and subservient for their powerless population.

There is no evidence up to this time of any real development of true law and order, accountability, decency, and integrity. Without those values, the degradation will continue ...

I do not agree with any body to live with each others w/o marriage. But today the world economy especially the US economy is bankrupted and for financial reasons and for other troubles can be avoided (husband killed his wife for a life insurance or vice versa), billion people around the world live together w/o marriage.

Official marriage is a legal paper accepted by the State. In Christianity Marriage is between man & woman And their GOD.

I married at Church, only me, my spouse, my mother and the Pastor.

3:27AM,

The khmer spelling is "sah," "nhor," nhor" root, (vowel) "ah" and "nah."

The harder sounding of "nhor" root makes the soft "ah" vowel into the "ia" or "ea" harder sound. Therefore, the "sanhian" pronunciation.

6:15 AM,

In what book did it say that, in Christianity, you should do sinful deeds first, and then ask for a "pardon?"

The concept of doing right to pay for the wrong deeds exists in all religions although not in the same description. In buddhism, you build up good karma to offset the bad ones. So, without god forgiving your sins, or good karma offsetting bad karma, where would you be? Even if you were an atheist, you have to practice love, compassion, and forgiveness to be able to exist without the endless cycle of sin and bad karma, or if you prefer, bad actions.

8:55 AM,

I admire your ability to read khmer dictionary;however, I doubt if you really understand the language. The short cut "preah dechak (one word, meaning power or super) kun" is used in spoken language for the full length of "preah dechak preah kun" just like some would pronounce phnom penh, while others would pronounce that name simply as 'm penh.

By the way, it is "dechak" in one word. The khmer spelling is "tah," srak or vowel "eh," "chor," srak or vowel "ahs" (resembles the colon in English.) The "tah" here takes the D sound.
